Job Scam in Vietnam

Nov 14, 2008

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported that there are bogus jobs for Vietnam offered by some unscrupulous Filipinos base in Ho Chi Minh to unsuspecting compatriots seeking overseas jobs.

Philippine Ambassador to Vietnam, Laura Del Rosario, reported that these individuals are asking the victims to pay the round-trip plane ticket from Manila-Ho Chi Minh-Manila amounting to Php 25,000 to Php 30,000. The said airfare normally cost only cost Php 7,000 to Php 18,000.

According to the report, some of the victims of these non-existing jobs pawned their assets while others borrowed money just to be able to pay the plane ticket.

Filipinos seeking job abroad, must always verify with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) if the job is legitimate and should undergo a proper documentation at the Overseas Workers' Welfare Administration (OWWA).

Each country, including Vietnam, requires foreign workers to secure legal working documents, including employment contract, working visa and permit, before working at the host country.

Overseas Filipinos workers (OFWs) in Vietnam usually holds executive and managerial positions in professional fields including construction and engineering, accountancy, banking and investment, education, garment/textile industry, hotel and restaurant management, food and beverage industry, marketing, furniture industry, medicine, and foreign investment projects, to name a few.

Vietnam is not a hot spot for OFWs as compared to other Asian countries like Singapore and Taiwan, that’s why only a few Filipinos are working here.
