Job Opportunities for OFWs in Qatar

Lots of employment opportunities for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) whose skills and professions are related to construction are available in Qatar this 2009.
According to the delegates from the Qatari government, more than 100,000 jobs are available for OFWs this year. The announcement was made during the 1st RP-Qatar Joint Committee Meeting held recently in Bohol recently.
The said meeting was held so the two countries can confer about the proposed Additional Protocol to the RP-Qatar Agreement Concerning Filipino Manpower Employment in Qatar. The said agreement between the government of the Philippines and Qatar was made in 1997 to ensure that the interests of OFWs are protected in Qatar.
The Secretary of Labor, Marianito Roque informed that for the period of October 2008 to March 2009, DOLE has already approved 296,787 work visas for OFWs. Of the said number, estimates of 190,000 were already filled up, so there are still 100,000 work visas available for OFWs.
Majority of job openings in Qatar (85%) are for workers are for technical and highly skilled workers in the construction sector.
The Philippine team was composed of Labor Undersecretary Arturo Sodusta, Deputy Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), Director Albert Valenciano of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa), and Labor Attaché Vivo Vidal.
On the other hand, representatives from Qatar was led by Deputy Minister Hussain Yousuf Al-Mulla of the Ministry of Labour (MOL).
Employment available for OFWs in Qatar is not the only thing discussed during the meeting, the two delegations also exchange ideas and information on how to address illegal recruitment and overcharging of placement fees to OFWs especially the household service workers.
