AFP Offer 12,000 Jobs for OFWs
May 18, 2009
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) expressed its willingness to offer assistance to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who were affected by the global financial crisis.
According to chief of AFP Public Affairs, Lt. Col. Ernesto Torres, their agency can offer employment to an estimate of 12,000 OFWs who recently lost their jobs. The number includes OFW dependents as well. Some of the jobs they can give are the following: auto mechanics, construction workers, nurses, psychologists, clerks, computer operators, and data encoders for six months.
This AFP program is in compliance with the Executive Order 782, which requires all government agencies to allot 15 % of their 2009 budget to extend assistance to affected OFWs registered with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
Torres informed that 15% of 2009 AFP’s budget for operating expenses amounts to Php 195 million.
He said, “At Php 8,000 per month (salary) for six months, the AFP may hire 12,188 persons.”
Torres informed that the AFP is currently examining its various military units all over the country to determine the number of temporary personnel they can hire and what positions they can give them.
Screening to confirm one’s qualifications to work for the military would be required to all applicants. Hiring is set to start in June of this year.
He said, “We will accommodate these workers as long as they are DOLE-registered displaced workers.”
