DOLE: No Displacement for OFWs in Dubai

Dec 6, 2009

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) assured Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWS) in United Arab Emirates, particularly in Dubai that there is no possibility of mass displacement of Filipino workers despite the city’s debt crisis.

“The debt crisis is expected to have no or minimal effect on the current employment of an estimated 250,000 Filipino workers in Dubai,” said Labor secretary Marianito Roque.

The worries of OFWs were noted after Dubai announced that they are seeking a six-month moratorium on debt payment worth $60 billion which lead the city into financial crisis.

Roque added that they have been closely monitoring the situation; however, as of now they have not received any reports of displacements of OFWs from the labor office in Dubai.

According to Roque, the financial crisis in Dubai is not expected to have massive impact compared to the effects of global financial crisis that has resulted to lay-oofs of OFWs in various countries.

“During the financial crisis, they projected a drop in deployment of Filipino workers and remittances abroad but I have proven them wrong,” said Roque.

Also, Roque pointed that despite the global financial crisis, demands for Filipino workers abroad continues to increase. The record growth in number of Filipino workers leaving the country is high as well as the dollar remittances of OFWs being sent in the country.

In case that the problem in Dubai caused unfortunate retrenchment to OFWs, Roque assured that the government has prepared a contingency plan to all who will get affected.

“We are already talking to some employers and our labor offices in the Middle East have been alerted to search possible employment of OFWs likely to be displaced,” he said.

Roque said that OFWs who get displaced might take chance to work in other emirates in UAE like Abu Dhabi or in nearby countries.

- Reklamador

TOTOO PO YUN! WALA PO TALAGA SILANG NATATANGGAP NA REPORTS DAHIL HINDI NAMAN PO NILA SINASAGOT ANG MGA PHONE CALLS. GUSTO NILA PUNTAHAN NYO SILA SA VILLA-OFFICE DURING REGULAR OFFICE HOUR KAYA KAILANGAN MAG ABSENT KA MUNA PARA MAPUNTAHAN LANG. AT DAPAT TUMINGIN MUNA SA KALENDARYO BAGO PUMUNTA DAHIL PAG HOLIDAY SA PINAS OR HOLIDAY SA UAE SARADO RIN SILA. ANG DAMI NILANG HOLIDAY!!!! SAYANG ANG ABSENT. NO WORK NO PAY PATI. - Monchchichi

- Monchchichi

I strongly agree particularly on the supposedly working day-schedule of our consulate people. What is the essence of our consulate if what it should render (services to OFW's) could not be effectively delivered and offered to our OFW's -just because of schedule conflict? Is there any other major purpose why they were sent their than to serve, protect and monitor the needs and situations of our Fellow countrymen working abroad to earn dollars to benifit their families and our government as well? Which, in turn are one of the major source of the consulates' salaries?

If thaT IS TRUE, well then, this request needs to be urgently heeded..
Buzzing our Government... Thankz - Planning_abroad

 hi,

just want everyone to know that before the news of dubai asking a moratorium of the payment of its loans, layoffs have been observed in the filipino workforce community...

a lot of filipino engineers and architects have been lay off due to the "redundancy" of positions..and this can be very well confirmed by a lot of filipinos in dubai...

while it is true that there have been few displacements on the 2nd half of 2009, much have been displaced as early as the last quarter of 2008..

and just for the authorities to know, the effect of the global crisis affects everyone and not just those who are working in the construction industries, the crisis that the world is facing right now has a domino effect..it affects all sectors here in UAE..hence, retrenchment of employees are happening..

the reason why remittances have increased on the last quarter is because of the coming holiday season, where filipinos remit a more than what they remit on a monthly basis so that their luv ones can have at least a wonderful holidays...

i appeal to the authorities to be responsible n bringing up news...filipinos are not that dumb to given wrong info...

and again an appeal to our authorities to change the working days of our consulate and office...they work from sunday to thursday, which is the same working days of all the OFWs...they can change it instead from monday to friday, so that those OFWs who need to visit them can go on friday, which is their free day..

i say this coz it s very difficult for the majority to leave their work during weekdays and if they do, they have to be absent from work...

this i a very urgent matter which i hope out authorities can look into... - Anonymous
