Increase Your Chance To Work Abroad: Learn A New Language

Jun 16, 2010

The ability to communicate in the English language is one of the traits that Filipinos can boast of as migrant workers. However as the competition in the global workforce becomes stiffer, knowledge in a foreign language other than English becomes necessary.

Being fluent in a foreign language such as Spanish, Niponggo, Mandarin, etc gives you an edge over others and has many advantages, but like any skill, it requires effort and commitment to master. So here are some tips to make learning a foreign language fast and easy.

Master basic concepts. Read the language textbook and take time to understand the basics. It is advisable that you start with the simplest lesson rather than jumping on to the advanced level.

Do an advanced reading. When you attend language class, it is likely that you will be given reference materials to guide you with the lesson. However it would also help if aside from the assigned materials, you would also seek and read other materials. This would be helpful if ever you find a specific concept or lesson difficult then you can always seek other materials that may be able to explain it more clearly.

Expose yourself to the new language. Exposure is a great way for one to learn a language and you can do it even without going to the country where that foreign language is spoken. There are myriad ways you can exposed yourself to a new language. You can try watching movies in the language that you are trying to learn. You can also try watching cable channels or visit websites.  You can also buy magazines or books written in the language. Another useful learning tool to get used to a new language is listening to their native music.

Practice speaking it properly. Make an effort to speak the language and pronounced the words with the correct intonation and diction. Knowing how to pronounced a foreign word properly is so important because even if you know the language, if you say it wrong, the native speaker may not be able to understand what you are saying.

Talk to a native speaker. It would really be helpful if you can regularly converse to a native speaker. They can help you correct your diction. You can even ask them to judge your progress in their language.

Enjoy while you learn. In every lesson, the key to learning fast is to have fun. So don’t be serious to the point that you find the lesson stressful and hard. Make sure to enjoy the leaning process.

Applicants that can understand and speak a foreign language truly have great advantage over others. Foreign employers would find that skill valuable and so may increase one’s chance of being offered a job.
