Q: What do you think about the deployment ban in Iraq?
It should be lifted because there are job opportunities for OFWs there.
The ban is necessary for the protection of OFWs.
I don't care about this issue.

China is one of the world's great civilizations, with a written history going back 3,500 years and a tradition of leading the world in the arts and sciences since ancient times. Today, after a tumultuous 20th century, China has the world's second largest GDP, and economic power has been disseminated. Also, China is home to 20 percent of the world's population.

China has experienced more than 20 years of unprecedented economic growth, during which the economy has grown faster than any other in history. China is among the world's largest producers of many agricultural products, including rice, potatoes, and sorghum. Other important industries in China include iron, steel, coal, armaments, and textiles. In the coming decade, the automobile and petrochemical industries are expected to grow rapidly.

History

For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.

Working in China is getting tougher each day. With the onslaught of many other foreigners wanting to get a slice of the job market, competition is really getting to be very stiff.

Being a teacher in the Philippines does not guarantee a teaching position in China. Not at all, especially in the eyes of the local schools, an English teacher should be caucasian, no matter if this person can spell correctly or is not even a trained teacher. If you speak English but is not a native speaker, chances are, you will get a "OK, will try you but..." Then when a parent sees that his child's teacher is anything but Caucasian, better start counting your days in that school as parents are a strong force in a school's decision-making whether you can stay or not. That said, it is still encouraging to see some Filipinos teaching in China and the amount of friendship they get from their students.

China now is filled with a lot of distractions unlike before when after work, you have no choice but to go home and start counting garlic cloves in the kitchen. With an over abundance of bars, KTVs, etc, some monied expats barely enjoy the comforts of their homes and would rather burn their earnings into these joints. Watch out for this kind of distractions, it's just not worth it.

Food, oh glorious food!, Chinese cuisine is a summary of many regional cuisines. Taste, colour, presentation, even source of their many ingredients, is in itself, an adventure. Chinese food never tasted better anywhere but here.

Come, join in the adventure. But be ready for disappointments as well. I never said it was easy. But I stuck it out here for the last 11 years and still counting. And all I can say is, "FEICHANG HAO". - Glenn Dy
