When Hired by a Recruitment Agency, You Should Pay for These

  Mar 10, 2014

It is very apparent that a lot of Filipinos desire to work overseas, a proof of that is the thousands of aspiring OFWs who look for overseas jobs either online or through walking-in recruitment agency offices. With that, it is also inevitable that as an applicant, you may pay for a lot of things, such as application for documents (passport, clearances, OECs, etc.), placement fees , visa, membership, insuarnce and the like.

But how much does it cost an OFW applicant to when he/she is hired?

That depends on "who" hire him/her: the recruitment agency, name-hire or the POEA through the Government Placement Branch (GPB).

In case an applicant (a hired worker) approached a POEA-licensed recruitment agency to help him/her with an overseas job application, the worker must expect that the following will be part of the charges and costs.

Placement Fee. This is charged to workers who already have job offers. The placement fee must be equivalent to one month salary of the worker, except for domestic workers, seamen and countries where charging of placement fee is not allowed.

Fees and Other Costs. The following are normally charged to the foreign employers/principals of the hired worker:
  • Visa fee- depending on the country/destination
  • Airfare-variable
  • POEA processing fee- Php 200.00
  • OWWA Membership- USD 25.00
  • Insurance Coverage- As prescribed by the Insurance Commission
  •
While some fees can be shouldered by employers themselves, some requirements should be shouldered by the applicants/hired workers, such as the following:

  • Passport application
  • NBI/Police/Barangay Clearance
  • Documentary authentication fees
  • Philhealth contribution
  • PAG-IBIG contribution
  • Trade test (if necessary)
  • Inoculation (If required by host country)
  • Medical examination fees
  • Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS) fee provided by authorized NGo service providers
  • Social Security System (SSS) contribution

If the recruitment agency does the documentation process on behalf of the hired worker, the worker should ONLY pay for the ACTUAL cost of the document provided that he/she be given an official receipt issued by the office issuing the document (i.e. NBI for NBI Clearance, etc.)
