5 Reasons Why Education is Important to OFWs and Their Families

  Feb 20, 2015

Overseas Filipino workers or OFWs carry a lot of pain. Working away from the family in an unfamiliar territory is a difficult thing to do. Despite the pain, they’re willing to work overseas just to feed their families and improve their life situation. That’s why they need empowerment, and they can get that through education. So if you’re an OFW who doesn’t have a college degree, you should get one. And you should encourage your family in the Philippines to pursue education too.

Here’s why:

More Opportunities

Are you tired of your current job? Don’t worry. Education can open new doors for you. If you have a degree, you’ll have more options in the job market. There’ll be more opportunities for you because educated people are more likely to land a higher paying job.

More Money

Education can help you earn more money. If you have good education, you can get a higher position in your job overseas. And of course, higher position means more income. Money may not give you ultimate happiness. But, it can make you less sad. With money, you’ll have more freedom and power.

Protects You from Being Tricked and Cheated

Earning money is tough, especially for OFWs. And all of your hard-earned income can disappear in a blink of an eye if you can’t protect it from cheaters. In this dog eat dog world, there are many people out there who will try to fool you to get your money. If you’re uneducated and unaware with your rights, it will be easy for them to trick you into signing a false document. But if you’re educated, you can discern if you’re being exploited and you can prevent it from happening.

Confidence

Education makes people more confident. If you’re educated, you know you’re secured. So, you’ll be more confident to express your beliefs and opinions. Also, if you have a degree, more people will listen to you and take you seriously.

Self-Reliance

Most OFWs are breadwinners. So if you’re the breadwinner in your family, you don’t want your dependents to rely on you for the rest of their lives. Of course you want them to be independent. If they finish their studies, they can get a good job and support themselves. And if that happens, you won’t have to carry the entire load by yourself.

Now, are you inspired to pursue education? You should be! Keep in mind that through education, you can build wealth and enjoy a stable life.
