Massive recruitment for foreign workers is currently underway in Canada specifically in the province of Saskatchewan. With a prosperous economy and a government that welcomes the arrival of migrants, an estimated 5,000 to 12,000 job opportunities awaits qualified overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the said Canadian province in the next five years.
Rob Norris, Saskatchewan’s Minister for Immigration, Advanced Education and Employment recently visited the Philippines for a week-long recruitment mission. In the recruitment drive conducted last month, Norris represented 11 major companies in Saskatchewan.
The minister said that representatives from the government of Canada recently met with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and other Philippine government officials to talk about the need of the province to deploy more OFWs in the coming years.
He said, "It is a time of tremendous optimism and opportunity for Saskatchewan. We are hoping to sustain this economic development and growth, not just for growths sake but for the improvement of the lives of our people."
Skilled laborers are in-demand in Saskatchewan today and job offers offer opportunities for migration and not just short term work. The Provincial Immigrant Nominee program of Saskatchewan welcomes skilled workers and their families to permanently settle in the province.
The minister said, "The fact that we are in the midst of economic growth, as opposed to some other provinces which are going through a disruption where people are being laid off, means that in Saskatchewan, immigrants have a chance at a higher quality of life with higher paying jobs."
Saskatchewan has become the first province of Canada to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Labor and Employment to facilitate the hiring of Filipino workers.
For a smooth and faster recruitment of OFWs to the province, Saskatchewan has a memorandum of understanding with the Philippine government. The agreement implements a no placement fee policy and that recruitment will only be through licensed Philippine recruitment agencies.
