Singapore and Macau Need RP Workers

  Aug 8, 2008

Filipinos are known for being hospitable, making them the ideal candidate for jobs that entail customer service. This is probably the reason why the hospitality industry of two countries, Singapore and Macau wants to recruit overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).  An executive from Singapore said that hotels and resorts in the said countries have up to 370,000 job vacancies and most of the companies wish to hire OFWs.

Edward Liu, managing director of Conference and Exhibition Management Services Pte. Ltd., said during the Trabaho sa Turismo Manila 2008 fair at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, “We need the skills and talents of the people of the Philippines. The Filipinos are the best. “Filipinos’ hospitality is known all over the world.”

According to Liu, around 10 to 20 hotels are currently being built in the island state of Singapore and upon its completion would create 70,000 jobs.

In the span of two years, two of the projects in Singapore, a hotel in Sentosa Park and a facility of the Universal Studio in Singapore would need 30,000 workers.

Meanwhile, hotels and casinos will open in Macau within the next two to three years and this will produce 100 to 300,000 job vacancies.

Liu said that the some of the positions that will be needed are receptionists, chefs, waiters, events organizers and other tourism staff.

To recruit more Filipino workers, the company of Liu has formed a partnership with the Department of Tourism. Liu said that next year, he would bring 100 companies, including hotels, resorts and casinos, from Singapore and Macau to deploy OFWs.
