Many Saudi Companies Not Complying with Saudization Policy

Saudi Arabia, the top destination of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) started implementing Saudization or the Nitaqat system last June, a policy that aims to prioritize the hiring of Saudi citizens over foreign workers. However, after six months of implementation, labor officials in Saudi are saying that Saudization is so far a failure.  
POEA Wants More Male OFWs in 2012

However, from time to time, we would hear news of maltreated OFWs and apparently female OFWs are more vulnerable to abuse or maltreatment. For this reason, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said that they hope to deploy more male OFWs in 2012.  
23% of New HIV Positive Cases in PH, an OFW

According to PhilHealth, one out of four HIV carriers is a migrant worker. The data from the National HIV and AIDS Registry said that out of the 7,584 total HIV and AIDS cases as of September 30 this year, 1,729 is an overseas Filipino worker (OFW).

Anti-Piracy Course for Filipino Seafarers in 2012

 A new training course that aims to help Filipino seafarers fight maritime piracy was recently held in the United States of America (USA). According to the Philippine Embassy in Washington D.C. the pilot training course participated by Filipino seamen was conducted by the US Maritime Administration and it ended last October 21.  
DFA: Deployment Ban in 41 Countries Postponed

An official from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced that they withdrew the negative certifications countries that reportedly failed to comply with the migrant policies that would provide sufficient protection for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) under the amended Migrant Workers Act. This means that the government is temporarily postponing the implementation of the said deployment ban in 41 countries.

New “Super Visa” for Immigrants in Canada

The Canadian government recently announced that a new type of visa for families will be available starting December of this year. The new two-year, multi-entry" super visa” is for the parents and grandparents of immigrants in Canada.  
POEA’s Official List of Additional 49 OFW-Friendly Countries

The DFA through its foreign posts added 49 new counties to the list by certifying that the following countries are likewise compliant with the guarantees under in Republic Act 10022 or the Amended Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995.

OFW in Hong Kong Wins Right to Apply for Permanent Residency

A Filipino domestic helper in Hong Kong recently won a fight that might benefit thousands of foreign workers in the said Asian country. Vallejos Evangeline Banao, an OFW in Hong Kong for almost twenty-two (22) years was granted the right to apply for permanent residency status.
