Job Description of Upholsterer

Nature of work:

Upholsterers are responsible for repairing household and transportation furniture. They replace upholstery on the defective chairs, sofa, bed, car chair and other furniture.

 

Basic Tasks:

  • Repair and replace upholster to the wrecked furniture
  • Designs upholstery cover patterns according to customer’s demand
  • Will be working on a team of interior designer to conceptualize designs according to the theme of client’s house or office
  • Add springs, webbing, cushions and pad in household or automobile chairs
  • Secure the position of webbings, foam, springs and pads inside the furniture.
  • Communicates with customers with their desired concepts and style
  • Make reports and submit ideas to the clients.
  • Connect and sew linings of the upholster using sewing machines.

 

 

Educational and Training Requirements:

  • Graduate of vocational course in Upholstery Making in any school accredited by TESDA.
  • High School graduate applicants are also welcome but should have experience in upholstery making and repairs.
  • Must have 3- 5 years of working experience as Upholsterer

 

Salary Information:

Local Employment:

  • Upholsterers receive at least PhP5, 000- PhP8, 000 a month.

 

Overseas Employment:

  • USA- Upholsterers abroad receives USD2, 600 or PhP127, 725 a month

 

Skills and Competency Requirements:

  • Must have above average knowledge in upholstery making, designing and conceptualizing
  • Know how to do stitching by hand or with the use of big sewing machines.
  • Know how to repair or redesign wrecked upholsters.
  • Must know different methods of upholstery making both in household and automobile.
  • Can communicate with the customers well and easy to understand what they want
  • Can visualize beautiful and unique styles that the client will like.
  • Ability to install webbings, cushions and springs without appearing too bulky.
  • Must be meticulous with his/ her work.
  • Must be goal oriented and can meet deadlines

 

Employment Opportunities:

It may not sound familiar but furniture and textile industry in US are open for Upholsterer foreign workers. The salary is high including benefits and holiday pays. Furniture companies require experienced applicants with excellent skills in upholstery.

 

 

Work Environment:

Upholsterer often works in a furniture factory/ shops or Car accessory shops. Upholsterer working environment in furniture factory are different from automobile shops, furniture factories have bigger customer’s demand and often used bigger sewing machines rather than in automobile shops.

 

Work Hours:

Upholsterers often worked for 8- 10 hours a day depending on the number of projects for each client.

 

Career Advancement:

Senior Upholsterer is the highest rank that an Upholsterer possibly achieve once he/ she is promoted.
