Dentists are responsible for treatment and caring of the mouth, including teeth and gums. They do check ups, examination, minor and major operations and other treatment regarding the teeth and gums.
Basic Tasks
Examine the teeth and mouth condition of patients.
Perform teeth restoration like removing decay and teeth cleaning.
Assessing the mouth and teeth condition of patients by interviewing them.
Pull rotten teeth, fill pasta to teeth with cavities or replace false teeth.
Checking the gums condition.
Cure soars and swelling on gums.
Conducts minor and major surgeries.
Conducts x-ray examination on teeth.
Advising and lecturing patients the proper care of teeth
Detect possible diseases on the mouth.
Educational and Training Requirements
Must be a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Dentistry and must hold an authentic license from PRC (Professional Regulatory Commission)
Must have attended seminars and training programs concerning mouth and teeth caring.
Must have at least 3-5 years experience.
Salary Information:
Local Employment:
PhP15, 000- PhP25, 000 a month
Overseas Employment:
US- USD129, 920 or PhP6,101,692 per annum
Oman- OMR400 or P48, 794 a month.
UAE-USD1, 200 or PhP56, 358 a month
Skills and Competency Requirements:
Must have good records in dental practice
Must be gentle in treating teeth problem such as pulling out teeth, filling pasta and treating gum problems.
Can use both hand tools and modern dental apparatus.
Must have experienced different dental cases.
Must have wide range of knowledge in dentistry.
Know basic pharmacy; advise patients what medications to take.
Can detect possible major diseases.
Employment Opportunities:
Like other medical professionals, Dentists are in demand abroad especially in the Middle East. Oman and UAE give high compensation for highly skilled dentist. In US, dentist are one of the highly paid profession, other part of the states are in need of licensed dentist as part of their medical unit expansion.
Working Environment:
Dentist often has their own clinics or works as intern dentist in a hospital. They are provided with a pleasant facility, complete with dental equipments. Dentists often works with team, he/she is assisted with dental nurse, assistant and technologist.
Working Hours:
Most Dentists has a flexible schedule because some works by appointment. However, Public Dentists or Dentists who works in hospitals often works 8 hours a day.
Career Advancement:
Hard working dentists can put up their own dental clinic aside from the usual work in hospital. Hospital Dentists on the other hand can be promoted as Head Dentist or Director in Dental Department.
