Job Description of Medic (Oil Rigs)

Nature of Job:

Oil Rig’s Medic is responsible in responding in medical accidents and caring of sick personnel and crews in the Rigs. Before taking aboard, part of their job is to do medical check-up on the crew and securing that the ship has enough medical and equipments needed.

 

Basic Tasks:

  • Check and secure that each crew has passed their medical examination before taking aboard.
  • Respond on accidents and or ill crew member.
  • Practice first aid respond.
  • Assuring enough supply of medicines and other medical equipment before taking aboard.
  • Conduct check-up for ill crew member and give proper medications.
  • Keeping medical records of each crew.

 

Education and Training Requirements:

  • Must be a graduate of any medical related course and must hold authentic license from PRC.
  • Must have first-aid or emergency respond training in Red Cross or any Humanitarian Organization.
  • Must have at least 3-5 years experience working as a medic.

 

Salary Information:

Local Employment:

  • Medics usually work as volunteers that receive fair allowances. Some also work in Red Cross and other humanitarian, emergency or rescue organizations. Medics in Hospitals receive minimum salary of PhP380/day.

 

Overseas Employment:

  • UK- GBP37, 000 or PhP2, 532,932 per annum.
  • US- USD42, 000 or PhP1, 985,340 per annum.
  • Saudi Arabia- Negotiable.

 

Skills and Competency Requirements:

  • Must have knowledge in first aid response and can do CPR and other medical responses.
  • Must have knowledge and skills in dealing accidents and minor and major illness.
  • Must have knowledge in basic pharmacy; can prescribe effective medications.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in responding and dealing unexpected accidents.
  • Must have knowledge and experience in taking medical examinations.
  • Basic knowledge in bookkeeping.

 

Employment Opportunities:

Despite of the crises and its effect to oil industry, several oil companies are still open for applicants. Because of the high demand of nursing applicants in hospitals, it is also advisable to try in different area like being a medic in oil rigs that offers bigger salary than working in organizations or hospitals.

 

Work Environment:

The environment for oil rig’s medic can be stressful but not often. They have to respond on accidents or ill crew member. They are always on the go and ready to respond at any time of the day.

 

Working Hours:

They work depending on the situation; they often work 10 hour-24 hours a day.

 

Career Advancement:

Medics can be promoted as Senior Medic or Head medic in the long run.
