Six Tips to Reduce Stress at Work

Paolo Martel,   Sep 21, 2018

Living in new places can cause stress, too. Too much stress is not good for you and can lead to health problems.

Here are six ways to reduce stress.

1. Avoid Caffeine, Nicotine, and Alcohol

You may want to grab one of these when you’re stressed, but more often than not, they will cause you to feel worse. Bakit? Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants and therefore will cause you to stress more. Alcohol is a depressant, but when used in small doses, will act as a stimulant. Also, avoid refined sugars as well, like cake or cookies. These may also give you a sugar high that will ultimately make you feel tired and annoyed.

2. Work Out or Do Some Physical Activity

When you are stressed, your body releases adrenaline and cortisol, which are fight or flight hormones. In order to rid your body of these hormones, you must exert some energy. A good tip is to go outside, do some walking on the spot and breathe some fresh air. Getting new oxygen into your lungs will calm you down. If you don't like to work out or run, take a brief walk around your local park every evening and soon you will be walking faster and for longer distances.

3. Sleep More and Better

If you exercise, you'll get a better night's rest. Nevertheless, stressful days often lead to stressful nights and a busy mind. Before you sleep, doing relaxing activities, like taking a bath or reading a book, can help calm your mind and get it in that restful state it needs to be stress-free.

4. Relax by Doing Something Enjoyable

Whether this is riding your bike, or doing yoga, try to get into a state of mind where you do not have to think about work. Instead, focus on what you enjoy. Repeating spiritual mantras can also help you.

5. Talk to Someone

Talking to a friend, neighbour, or relative, even if we are not sharing our problems, can create helpful, relaxing hormones in our bodies. This is important because sometimes we overthink things when we are stressed, causing us to make mistakes or say hurtful and unnecessary things. Remember that just like anger, stress creates an unhealthy state of mind.

6. Manage Your Time

Life is busy, lahat tayo ay busy lalo na kung nagtatrabaho ka sa abroad. That’s why it’s very important to manage your time. If you feel you cannot get something done, tell your employer right away that you need extra time or help. Kung may sakit ka, magpahinga. Use common sense. Remember that managing your life, and controlling your stress depends on you managing your time in a responsible way.

Working overseas can be stressful, but with the right tools you can succeed and get whatever your heart desires.
