The plan to transfer the United States (US) military base in Okinawa Japan to Guam would result in a big construction project. This will create job opportunities for construction-related occupations in Guam for the next 5 to 7 years. The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) Chairman Rosalinda Baldoz said that more or less 12,000 to 15,000 Filipino construction workers may be hired. To make these jobs available to Filipinos, the Philippine government is coordinating with Guam officials.
The Guam government also wanted to renew its manpower cooperation supply with Manila, as it did in the sixties to the eighties, when the Philippines had a labor office on the island.
Chairman Baldoz who is in Guam said, “We will work it out. The infrastructure to be developed will be funded by the US government. We will talk about the details, the volume of workers they needed, how long the project will last, what skills are needed and the requirements needed by our workers.”
“More job opportunities for Filipinos are expected to be made available after the infrastructure for the US military base has been set up, such as in maintenance and operations work, and hotel and restaurants personnel, she said. The global demand for skilled Filipino workers is proof of the Filipino’s competence and dedication,” Baldoz said
