In America, the states of Maryland and Kansas are the most active in recruiting teachers from the Philippines.

Some are working as high school science and math teachers while others are elementary and special education teachers. Thirteen of the 18 teachers have a master’s degree.

On the other hand, Maryland has hired almost 200 teachers from the Philippines this year. Twenty-eight of the newly hired teachers are set to start teaching in Prince George’s County schools. Another 170 will start August of 2008 coming for the 2008- 2009 academic year.

The new recruits are allowed to teach in the county for six years with temporary citizenship. After the six-year period, the teachers apply for US citizenship or go back to the Philippines.

Maryland

The US schools prefer Filipino teachers because the accreditation requirements are very much like the American requirements.

School board chairman in
Maryland, Owen Johnson said, ‘‘We’re not training the teachers in the United States, so we need to start looking at places where there are more teachers. ‘‘They recognize our shortages. ... They have been very aggressive in getting us to come and recruit."

Kansas

The Topeka Unified School District 501 in Kansa needs teachers which can provide instruction in areas where US schools are finding it increasingly difficult to fill. Officials from Topeka Unified School District will go the Philippines to recruit teachers next month.

Interested applicants have to meet licensing requirements, immigration and certification requirements, get a visa, and pass a language examination. They must also be willing to work on a particular date.
