Fifty graduating high school students will benefit from the first 50 scholarships in marine or naval engineering to be given by a group of international ship owners. This is for the school year 2008-2009 at the
This is a project of International Maritime Employers Committee (IMEC), an association of ship owners who in total owns an estimate of 6,500 ships and provides work for about 50,000 Filipino seamen.
Through this project, the IMEC aims to fill the severe labor shortage for marine officers worldwide. The secretary general of the International Maritime Employers Committee (IMEC), David Dearsley, informed that the scholarship was the fourth project of IEC that intends to draw more people into the marine profession.
Aside from the scholarship, Dearsley said IMEC would also be training ratings (non-officers) with officer’s licenses already at sea so that they could function as officers; give “enhancement” trainings to cadets not at sea; and convert mechanical and electrical engineers into marine or naval engineers.
Dearsley added that for the school year 2009-2010, the program would expand to finance the education of 250 others. According to Captain Cedric D’Souza, training manager for IMEC-Manila, the scholarships are worth P360,000 each for the four years. This would cover tuition fees, board and lodging, and books.
Upon graduation, the scholars are guaranteed sea-time training and employment. Applicants need to have a high school average grade of 85%; and no grade in Math, Science, and English lower than 80%. They would also undergo an IQ test and an interview with a psychologist. Those interested may contact Dr. Felly Cardente-Yap of the
