Care Assistants: In Demand in UK

If the idea of working in United Kingdom appeals to you, then you might want to consider pursuing a career as a care assistant. Sometimes referred to as care workers and social care workers, this job involves providing practical support for individuals with different types of disabilities or special needs. The clients can vary from young to old, individuals or families, and the disabilities can be physical or mental.

 

Likewise the work location of care assistants can also vary from daycare centers, residential setting, nursing homes, etc. If you want to be a care assistant, be informed that this job is physically exhausting and mentally challenging. In general, the job description of a care worker can be summed up by the following points:

 

Working closely with individual clients, recognizing and providing their special and social needs.

 

Helping clients with their daily routines like eating, taking a bath, dressing up, etc.

 

Performing basic duties like household chores and doing the grocery.

 

Provide assistance to families and parents adjust to new caring responsibilities.

 

Consulting and cooperating with other social care workers in making individual care and development plans.

 

In a residential setting, performing the role of a ‘key worker’ to one or two individuals.

 

Planning and assisting in recreational activities

 

Accompanying clients from the residential home to other locations like school or office.

 

Acts as a 'personal assistant' of a disabled person in his/her day to day activities.

 

Requirements:

 

Diploma/degree holder in any allied medical field (Nurses, under board RN, PT ) with minimum six months working experience, an advantage with elderly set up.

 

Proficient in English (speaking & writing skills equivalent to IELTS band of 5.5)

 

Salary Information

 

Annual Salary £10,764 - £14,500 but not below the minimum wage set by UK law or more or less Php 693,039.494

 

Hourly Rate

£5.52 - £7.00 (Php 364.60 -462.03)

 

Net monthly

Approximately £700 - £1000  =  Php 70,000.00 -P100,000.00

 

Working Hours

The full time work is between 37 and 40 hours a week. Some care assistants also work during weekends while others work as a stay-in care assistant.

 

A care assistant must posses the following characteristics: Friendly, caring, respectful, adjusts and get along well with different types of people, patient, with good sense of humor, reliable, flexible, calm and aware of basic health, safety and hygiene standards.
