Jobs for Filipino Teachers in Thailand

  Glaiza Anne S. Wood,  Jan 19, 2009

Today it seems that the cost of living has risen to nearly insurmountable heights. Many families struggle just to make ends meet. In such cases, the Filipino worker is the forced to look for other options. As always, the most popular option is to work abroad.

Filipino Teacher’s Abroad

Teachers are one of the many Filipino professionals that have no trouble finding work outside the country. Some teachers have even gone to teach elementary and high school students in the US. In Asia, the demand for Filipino teachers is growing. The main reason is that Filipino teachers are highly proficient in English.

Work in Thailand

In the last few years, Thailand has been importing Filipino teachers. This is an attempt by the country to augment the need for proficient English speaking teachers in their schools. The country is also importing other foreign teachers to work in Universities and colleges. If you are a teacher here in the Philippines, then you have the chance of moving to Thailand. The salary there is considerably higher than what teachers earn here, but it is not as high as what teachers earn in some western countries.

Most teachers in Thailand earn 17000 to 35000 Baht monthly. That’s around 23000 to 46000 PHP or 500 to 1000 USD. The salary rate is higher in private institutions compared to government and public schools. The salary difference, however, is attributed to the difference in the number of hours worked.

Having a training certificate in TESL or Teaching English as a Second Language may not be necessary. But it will certainly give the applicant an edge over the competition.  Some schools even give applicants a bonus if they have had TESL training before application.

Subjects Taught

Filipino teachers in Thailand are hired to teach all sorts of subjects. English is one of the major subjects that foreign teachers are hired  for. The country is also in need of teachers proficient in other subjects. They are hiring English speaking teachers no matter what their base subjects are. Teachers who are qualified may also be called to teach in Universities and Colleges.

Finding a Job

Teachers who wish to teach in Thailand can find a job among the many recruitment agencies in the country. They can also try their luck at one of the job hunting sites all over the internet. However, teachers should always be wary of the threat of illegal recruitment. Before investing anything they should always see to it that the processes are legal. One way to do it is by checking their agency against the POEA. They can also verify with the Thai Ministry of Education to see if the school they are applying to is legitimate.
