Nature of Job:

Machinist works in industrial or construction fields. Machinist plays major part of an industry since they are the one who has knowledge and ability to operate big, heavy duty machines that is important for mass production.

Basic Tasks:

• Operates big machines.
• Activate and deactivate machines.
• Read and follow blueprints and manuals.
• Check and record machine status.
• Report abnormalities and observation with the machines.
• Maintain the function of the machine (change oil, clean, check wire connections, etc.).
• Follow instructions from engineers or head officers.
• Monitor the speed and feed of the machine during the operation.
• Monitor how the machine works with other equipments.
• Check the quality that the machine produces.

Educational and Training Requirements:

• Must have at least taken vocational course or short course in any field.
• Must have work experience in Industrial field of Factory as a machinist or any related position.

Skills and Competency Requirements:

• Must have wide knowledge and ability to operate machines (industrial or construction).
• Must have the ability and knowledge to follow instructions.
• Must have knowledge in machines.
• Must have knowledge in quality control and assessment.
• Must have basic knowledge in engineering.
• Must have basic knowledge on how to repair simple machine problems.
• Can read basic blueprints.
• Must be a fast learner.
• Must have strong built.
• Can communicate well.

There’s a bright future for machinist especially abroad. Machinist is one of the construction/ industrial jobs that is not seasonal, meaning there’s always a job opportunity for machinist. Most countries that offer jobs for machinists are in the Middle East, Canada and Australia.

Work Environment:

Machinists are often exposed to heavy equipments and hot facilities. However, they are provided with safety wardrobes and apparels to protect themselves from accidents.

Work Hours:

Depends on the type of industry that they belong, machinist works for 8-10 hours a day.

Career Advancement:

Entry level machinist can be promoted as factory supervisor or QA analyst when he/she obtained good performance record.
