Job Description of Arborist

Nature of work:

Arborist is responsible of caring trees. They are in charge of trimming, shearing, irrigating, spraying and maintaining of trees. Arborist also study tree condition based on its age, height and its roots. They often climb big and tall trees and often work in parks and forest.

 

Basic task:

  • Arborist is responsible for the grooming of trees i.e. trimming of leaves.
  • To nurture the trees by spraying pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers and other necessary chemicals.
  • To repair the trees affected by natural calamity.
  • To maintain and operate power equipment, hand tools and climbing equipment used in tree caring.
  • Recording of chemical application and tree condition daily.

 

Education and training Requirements:

  • Has a college degree preferably botany, agriculture or any related course.
  • Must have at least 2-5 years experience working as arborist
  • Must have comprehensive training background in tree caring, pesticides and insecticides.

 

Skills and competency requirements:

  • Must have experience in tree trimming and tree surgery
  • Must have wide knowledge on trees
  • Must have knowledge on nurturing trees.
  • Must have knowledge in mixing chemicals and other substance used in pesticide, insecticides and tree vitamins
  • Can assess tree condition just by looking at trees structure
  • Knowledge in repairing damaged trees
  • Must have strong built to carry debris and fallen trunks.
  • Have knowledge in tree cultivation. 
  • Ability to climb trees. Don’t have fear of heights.

 

Work environment:

Arborist does a lot of field work. They often work in schools, public and private parks. Arborists are also hired by environmental organizations; they often visit forest and study tree condition by examining their age, the climate and soil. Arborists also respond in areas that are affected by heavy storms, they usually fix trees and move debris.

 

Working Hours:

Arborists in parks and schools often work for 8 hours a day. However, Arborist in an environmental organization often works longer than 10 hours especially when they respond in areas affected by heavy storms.

 

Employment Opportunities:

Arborist with a comprehensive training and academic background are often offered with higher salary. Some company based their salary on the experience and knowledge of the applicants. Universities and Non Government Organization focusing on environment often hire arborist yearly to form a team that will study tree conditions.

 

Career Advancement:

Promotion is based on experience and knowledge, hardworking Arborist can be promoted as the Senior Arborist or Officer in Charge (Arborist in emergency responding team).
