Job Description of Locomotive Engineer

Jobs for Locomotive Engineer

 

Nature of Work:

Drive electric, diesel-electric, steam, or gas-turbine-electric locomotives to transport passengers or freight. Interpret train orders, electronic or manual signals, and railroad rules and regulations

 

Basic Tasks:

  • Monitor and record functions of rails, trains, gas-turbine locomotives and other locomotive machines and tools
  • Examine the vehicle to detect malfunctions and damages
  • Monitor gauges and meters that measure speed, amperage, battery charge, and air pressure.
  • Monitor train loading procedures to ensure that freight and rolling stock are loaded or unloaded without damage.
  • Observe tracks to detect obstructions.
  • Prepare daily reports based on the observation upon monitoring
  • Reporting observed malfunction in trains, rails and other machines to the supervisors or head officers.

 

Educational and Training Requirements:

  • Graduate of Mechanical Engineering, Locomotive Engineering or any relevant courses.
  • A comprehensive on-the-job training from Transportation or Communication Company is required for entry level applicants
  • Must have 3-5 years experience in locomotive transportation.

 

Skills and Training Requirements:

  • Must have wide knowledge in locomotive transportation, trains, and other locomotive machines
  • Must know how to operate locomotive machines
  • Can drive trains and locomotive transportations
  • Knowledge in monitoring gauges
  • Must have knowledge in basic mathematics to calculate speed, amperage and air pressure.
  • Can easily detect malfunctions and damages.
  • Can fix defected equipments
  • Can do a comprehensive reports about the locomotive conditions
  • Must be articulate and keen to every detail.

Working Environment:

Locomotive Engineer usually do field work. They usually work under the extreme heat of the sun; they monitor railroads or check trains. Some also works in locomotive factories where trains and other locomotive transportation is made. Their work is often greasy and dirty.

 

Work Hours:

Locomotive Engineers working hours exceed from their minimum working time of 8 hours to 10 hours or longer due to unexpected problem especially that they usually assign in transportation.

 

Career Advancement:

Highly motivated entry level Locomotive Engineers can be promoted as Senior Locomotive Engineer or Project Engineer.
