Nature of Job:
Massage Therapists are responsible in relaxing one’s body. They help release stress and help circulate blood freely by massaging the body. Massage Therapist often works as a freelance, other works in wellness and spa centers.
Basic Tasks:
- Help customer relax by giving massage treatments.
- Massage according to client’s condition (i.e. pregnant, limb or stroked)
- Perform different kinds of massage (i.e. Swedish, shiatsu,) according to the customer’s demand.
- Use appropriate rubbing liquids, vibrating tools, and other massage equipments.
- Prepare the room for the guest; assist them to their designated rooms.
- Prepare the client’s toiletries, oils and lotion and other necessity for aroma therapy.
- Advising the customer suitable massages according to what they want.
Educational Requirement:
- A graduate of vocational course in Massage Therapy or Reflexology
- Must hold authentic license
- High School graduates are also encourage to apply, but must have experience as massage therapist.
- Must have at least 1-3 years experience.
Skills and Competency Requirements:
- Must have wide knowledge and expertise in various massages.
- Knowledge on the proper ways of relaxations.
- Must have knowledge in human body (i.e. muscles, bones, blood circulations)
- Perform gentle and hard massages according to the client’s demand.
- Know different style of massages according to the health condition of the client.
- Must have knowledge on the different attributes of massages in the body.
- Have the ability to communicate well with clients, verbal and non verbal.
- Must be courteous.
- Knowledge in using different massage equipments such as facial massager, massage vibrators as well as the rubbing liquids that are used in therapy.
- Must know how to perform good customer service
Employment Opportunities:
Locally, massage therapist are very in demand nowadays because of the emergence of spa and wellness centers in the country. They offer competitive salary and high commission in every client. The same with other countries, because of the high demand of people who seek relaxation and massage, number of spa and wellness centers emerges.
Working Environment:
The working place for massage therapist is very conducive and pleasant. Since they often work in Spa, the environment is very cozy and has very relaxing ambience. Freelance and Home based massage therapist however, does not have specific location of work. They visit the client’s house or hotel rooms to do massage sessions.
Working Hours:
The working time of masseur will depend on the number of customer or the time per massage session. The normal time per session is 1-3 hours depending on what type of massage or packages the customer demanded. However, Spa massage therapist often do shifting schedule, they stay 8-10 hours a day/night.
Career Advancement:
Highly skilled massager can be promoted as supervisor or manager. They can also open business owned massage parlor or spa.
