Nature of Job:
Orthodontists are responsible in giving treatment, diagnosis and examination on the abnormalities in jaw structure, teeth alignment and other mouth problems. They also give treatment to teeth alignment problem by putting braces, retainers or conduct operation.
Basic Tasks:
- Examine and make diagnosis on client’s teeth problem.
- Conduct check-ups. Pull out rotten teeth.
- Conduct x-ray examination and minor surgeries.
- Measure and make pattern for braces, retainers or false teeth.
- Examine the jaw structure ad teeth alignment of the patient.
- Apply braces or retainers to patient with teeth alignment problem.
- Prescribe medicine and other topical medication to swollen gums.
- Secure the alignment of the braces, retainers or false teeth.
- Examine the gums of the patient.
- Examine possible major diseases.
- Advice patients proper care of the teeth and to treat their problem.
- Secure the confidentiality of the medical records of the patient.
Education and Training Requirements:
- Must be a graduate of Dentistry or Orthodontist and hold authentic license
- Applicants with PhD or hold multiple medical certifications has an advantage.
- Must have at least 3-5 years experience.
Skills and Competency Requirements:
- Must have wide knowledge in dentistry.
- Must have handled different cases of teeth or mouth problem.
· Must have wide knowledge in treating bone problems such as jaw and teeth alignment.
· Must have knowledge in dental technology such as measuring and applying braces, retainers and false teeth.
- Knowledge in conducting examinations and diagnosis using dental equipments.
- Must be gentle in treating patient’s teeth problem such as pulling out teeth, cleaning and treating gums or checking jaw structure.
- Ability to perform dental procedures using hand tools and dental equipments.
- Ability to detect possible major illness or disease.
- Knowledge in basic pharmacy, can prescribe effective medications.

Work Environment:
Orthodontists have more flexible time than other medical professions. Their work is not as hectic and stressful for they usually work on minor cases except for some major problem like jaw structure and applying braces to patient that can take for an hour. Since they promote good health, their workplace is kept clean and sanitize at all times.
Work Hours:
Orthodontist has flexible time; they work for 6-8 hours a day.
Career Advancement:
Most experienced orthodontist often put up their own clinic in the long run of service. However, hospital Orthodontist with good records and experience can be promoted as Head Dentist or Director of Dental Department.
