Nature of Job:

Dairy Farmers usually works in a cattle and poultry farm. They are responsible in taking care of the animals that includes, feeding, bathing, and milking.

 

Basic Tasks:

  • Taking care of the animals in the farm particularly the cows.
  • Feeding the animals.
  • Milk the cows.
  • Deliver the milk in its designated destinations.
  • Observed the milk for pasteurizations.
  • Inject/feed vitamins for the animals.
  • Watch over the cows.
  • Clean the cow’s resting areas.
  • Taking care of sick animals.
  • Report and Encode observations over the cows and other animals.

 

Education and Training Requirements:

  • Must be a graduate of veterinary or any related agricultural course.
  • Must have at least experience working in a cattle farm.

 

Skills and Competency Requirements:

  • Must have wide knowledge in taking care of animals particularly the cows.
  • Knowledge in feeding and injecting vitamins for the cows.
  • Must have wide knowledge in a cattle industry.
  • Knowledge and ability to milk cows.
  • Knowledge in milk pasteurization.
  • Knowledge on how to take care sick animals.
  • Know how to observe the mood and characteristics of animals.

 

Employment Opportunities:

Dairy farmers are highly in demand in country like New Zealand where their main source of income came from dairy farms. Dairy farmers are one of the highest paying jobs in New Zealand, where most company are into dairy businesses.

 

Work Environment:

Dairy farmers often work outdoors. They often spend their time observing and taking care of the animals in the farm.

 

Work hours:

Dairy farmers often work for 8-10 hours a day.

 

Career Advancement:

Dairy farmers who holds a degree in veterinary or agriculture can be promoted to higher position, like Farm Manager or Head veterinarian.
