The Philippines, which you can barely see on the map, is a very effective country thanks to its people. It has the ability to influence the entire world economy. We should pay respect to Filipino workers, not only by employing them but also by learning from their valuable experiences.

Another overseas Filipino worker (OFW) has brought pride to the country, she is Mica Alcedo, a Filipina nurse. Alcedo has been working in Australia since 2004 and for this year, she is one of the recipients of the Pride of Australia Awards.

But while the 50-year-old spouse of a seaman is used to doing the latter, there was a lifting feeling as she did the former. Who wouldn’t be if, like Dela Cruz, she was the matriarch of this year’s most outstanding Filipino seafaring family, awarded December 6 by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

Orly Albaracin of Davao del Sur felt what most Filipino workers who decided to work abroad felt. He knows that his salary in the Philippines is so low that it won’t be enough to give his family the good life that he wants them to enjoy. He also thinks that the culture of “palakasan system” is so evident here that it is so hard even for an honest and hardworking employee to get promoted and earn more. Orly said that even if he toiled so hard his efforts would not pay off and he would still remain poor.

It also spurred the need to review the Live-in caregiver program. Tejada is a founding member of the United Steelworkers' Independent Workers Association, a group of Philippine live-in caregivers, all struggling with cancer and immigration.

Her experience as an OFW can be considered nice and pleasant because lady luck seems to have stayed with her since she started working abroad. She started out as an ordinary ESL teacher but her excellent work performance was immediately noticed and she got promoted right away.
